StratOwl's free Pine Script backtester translates the common calls of a Pine v4 or v5 script into its own rules and simulates them, three runs a day with no account, inside a no-code strategy builder with alerts. Alpha Charts runs the Pine v6 script itself on US stock data, charges costs and checks every run on held-out data by default, and writes the script with AI. Here is how to choose.
StratOwl's column is what stratowl.com says, checked on 24 October 2026.
| ALPHA CHARTS | STRATOWL | |
|---|---|---|
| What runs your script | The Strategy Tester runs the Pine v6 script you paste, on its own Pine runtime, on real market data | A translator that maps common ta.* calls (RSI, MACD, SMA/EMA, crossover/crossunder) into StratOwl's indicator model, by best-effort translation; unmapped calls are skipped and listed as warnings |
| Pine Script | Pine v6, as TradingView has it | Pine v4 and v5 |
| Where you work | The Alpha Charts dashboard in the browser, plus the Alpha indicators on TradingView (Pro, Max) | StratOwl's workspace: a visual Strategy Builder, backtesting, a Strategy Miner, Market Radar scans, templates and a Learning Center |
| Markets | US stocks and ETFs; NQ, MNQ, ES and MES futures for signed-in accounts | Equities, cryptocurrency, forex and commodities; coverage varies by market and asset, and no data provider is named |
| Trading costs in a backtest | 5 bps commission and 2.5 bps slippage per side on every run, by default; a commission the script declares wins | Not mentioned on its backtester page |
| Every backtest | Split into in-sample and out-of-sample with a verdict, drawdown analytics, the full trade list and every trade on the chart | Strike Rate, Total Move %, Move Factor and Max Drawdown, with warnings for the calls it skipped |
| Held-out test | Every run: about the last third of the history is kept apart and judged on its own, with its dates and a verdict | Not described on its pages |
| AI | The Pine Copilot writes Pine v6 from plain words, checks it and backtests it | Ask Owl gives educational explanations: 2 a month free, 25 a month on Pro; no AI writes a script |
| Alerts | Not part of the tester | Telegram or push notifications when a strategy's rules match, monitored in the background |
| Free start | Unlimited free backtests on a free account, no card; free tools with no account | 3 free backtester runs a day with no account; the Starter plan is free forever: 3 saved strategies, 6 backtests a day, 1 live pairing, 3 Market Radar scans a day |
| Plans | $49.99, $99.99 or $129.99 a month, less on the yearly plan; every plan comes with 30 days money back | Pro $19.99 a month: 25 saved strategies, 25 backtests a day, 10 live pairings, 25 scans a day |
The Strategy Tester runs the Pine script itself on real data, not a rewrite of it. Orders fill at the next bar's open, the script never sees future data, and every fill pays 5 bps commission and 2.5 bps slippage per side by default.
Each run is split into an in-sample and an out-of-sample period, stated as dates. The held-out part gets a verdict: survived, decayed, did not survive, or too few trades to judge. Drawdown analytics and the full list of trades come with every run.
The optimiser fits a script's inputs on the past, judges them on data it never saw, and compares the winner against the best of the same number of random tries.
The data and its adjustments, the universe and its survivorship bias, the fill rules and the verdict's thresholds are written out in Data and methodology.
For traders who want their Pine script run as written on US stocks, with costs charged and a held-out verdict on every run, yes. StratOwl fits a quick check of a simple idea with no account, and traders who want a no-code builder with alerts.
It translates the common calls it recognises, such as RSI, MACD, moving averages and crossovers, into its own rules, and skips the rest with a warning. Alpha Charts runs the Pine v6 script itself on its own runtime, so every rule in the script counts.
Alpha Charts charges 5 bps commission and 2.5 bps slippage per side on every run by default. StratOwl's backtester page does not mention commission or slippage.
Alpha Charts keeps about the last third of every run apart and gives it a verdict. StratOwl's pages do not describe one.
StratOwl lists all three. Alpha Charts backtests US stocks and ETFs, plus NQ, MNQ, ES and MES futures for signed-in accounts.
Alpha Charts plans start at $49.99 a month, with 30 days money back, and a free account backtests without limit. StratOwl gives 3 backtester runs a day with no account, a free Starter plan, and Pro at $19.99 a month.
