TradingView Strategy Tester alternatives

Six Pine Script backtesters that run outside TradingView, read from their own sites on 24 October 2026: what each runs, on which markets, what it charges in a backtest, what is free, and when to use it.

The six, side by side

Each line is what the tool's own site says; the comparison pages hold the rest and the sources.

When to leave TradingView's tester, and when not to

Stay with it when the chart you trade on is the point: it is the reference engine for Pine, it covers every market TradingView charts, and on Premium and higher Deep Backtesting runs the whole history. Set commission and slippage in the strategy's properties before you trust a result; its own documentation says a result without costs overestimates a strategy's past.

Leave it for a question it cannot answer: costs charged by default, a held-out period judged on its own, a sweep across hundreds of settings, walk-forward or robustness statistics, or history past what your plan loads. Pick the tool by market first, then by whether it runs your Pine as written or rebuilds it.

Whatever you use, expect numbers that differ from TradingView's: a different engine, different data and real costs. The honest tools say so, and the data and methodology behind this one is written out in Data and methodology.

Questions

Why use anything but TradingView's Strategy Tester?

For what it leaves out. It charges no trading costs unless the script sets them, it tests only the bars loaded on the chart (5,000 on the free plan; Deep Backtesting needs Premium), it has no held-out test and no optimiser, and it cannot sweep settings. Every tool here answers one or more of those; TradingView's own documentation warns that a result without costs overestimates a strategy's past.

Which alternatives run the actual Pine script?

Alpha Charts (Pine v6 on its own runtime), Foresight (Pine v5 and v6, compiled) and PineTester (Pine v6, converted to Python) run the script you paste. Deepwick runs the part of Pine its subset covers. StratOwl translates the common calls and skips the rest. Stratest rebuilds a strategy rather than running Pine.

Which is free?

Foresight is free while its beta lasts. StratOwl gives three runs a day with no account and has a free plan. Deepwick, Stratest and PineTester have free tiers with limits. Alpha Charts gives a free account unlimited backtests with no card, and every paid plan comes with 30 days money back.

Which covers crypto or forex?

Deepwick, PineTester (crypto only), StratOwl, Stratest and Foresight (with your own data or its feeds). Alpha Charts covers US stocks and ETFs, plus NQ, MNQ, ES and MES futures for signed-in accounts.

Will the results match TradingView's?

Not exactly, on any of them. TradingView's engine is the one Pine is written for; every alternative runs its own engine on its own data, and the honest ones say so. Foresight publishes how closely its trades match. Charging costs by itself lowers a result against TradingView's default of none.
