Alpha Charts vs TrendSpider

Alpha Charts runs Pine Script, TradingView's language, and checks every backtest on data it never saw. TrendSpider covers more markets, with JavaScript scripting and no-code tools. Here is how to choose.

Choose Alpha Charts if

  • you use TradingView and write or collect Pine scripts
  • you trade US stocks and ETFs, or NQ and ES futures
  • you want the AI to write Pine Script v6 for you
  • you want every backtest checked on held-out data, with costs in

Choose TrendSpider if

  • you trade options, forex, crypto or futures beyond NQ and ES
  • you want trading bots or a no-code strategy builder
  • you prefer a longer-established platform

Check further first if

  • you need daily history before 2016
  • you want independent evidence that results match live trading

How Alpha Charts tests a strategy

The Strategy Tester runs the Pine script itself on real data, not a rewrite of it. Orders fill at the next bar's open, the script never sees future data, and every fill pays 5 bps commission and 2.5 bps slippage per side by default.

Each run is split into an in-sample and an out-of-sample period, stated as dates. The held-out part gets a verdict: survived, decayed, did not survive, or too few trades to judge. Drawdown analytics and the full list of trades come with every run.

The optimiser fits a script's inputs on the past, judges them on data it never saw, and compares the winner against the best of the same number of random tries.

The data and its adjustments, the universe and its survivorship bias, the fill rules and the verdict's thresholds are written out in Data and methodology.

What Alpha Charts does not do

  • Backtest anything but US stocks and ETFs, plus NQ, MNQ, ES and MES futures for signed-in accounts: no index values, crypto, forex, other futures or options.
  • Show live volume from every exchange: live prices come from IEX, so the newest 15 minutes carry IEX's volume alone. Daily history starts in 2016.
  • Connect to a broker or trade live.
  • Show independent reviews or published benchmarks yet: it is a new product (2026).
  • Give investment advice: these are research and education tools.

Questions

Can I test my TradingView strategy on Alpha Charts?

Yes. Paste the Pine Script v6 strategy as TradingView has it and the Strategy Tester runs that script on real market data. Alpha Charts uses its own Pine runtime, so a script can occasionally behave differently than on TradingView.

Do I need to know how to code?

No. On a plan, the Pine Copilot writes the script from a description in plain words, checks it and backtests it. A free account can paste an existing script and backtest it as often as it likes.

Does passing the out-of-sample check mean a strategy will work live?

No. It shows whether the strategy held up on data it was not tuned on, which is a better test than the fitted period alone. Live results still depend on the market, the number of trades, the costs you really pay and how often the strategy was re-tuned.

Which is better for futures, options, forex or crypto?

TrendSpider for options, forex and crypto, and for futures beyond NQ and ES. Alpha Charts backtests US stocks and ETFs, plus NQ, MNQ, ES and MES futures for signed-in accounts.

How much does each cost?

Alpha Charts plans start at $49.99 a month, with 30 days money back, and a free account backtests without limit. TrendSpider lists several plans and a 14-day trial for $1 on its Standard and Premium plans; its current prices are on trendspider.com/pricing.
